Barb Jungr The Men I Love – The New American Songbook out NOW: Reviews from the web

The wait is over… Barb Jungr’s latest offering ‘The Men I Love – The New American Songbook is officially out and is getting rave reviews.  That’s hardly surprising, considering the quality of her music, and I recommend anyone who hasn’t experienced her music to order a copy.

Reviews from her successful Café Carlyle season in New York City are coming soon!

From The Art of Torch Singer

Springsteen’s “The River” is all the evidence you need of Jungr’s subtelty and honesty, honouring the lyric and story without compromising her own style. And then there is her take on “Wichita Lineman” – perhaps her boldest move on the album: Jimmy Webb’s strange, haunting tale of loneliness and separation, originally a hit for Glen Campbell, is three minutes of distilled, crystalline beauty – and frankly, it’s the high point of Jungr’s finest work to date. No Brit required.

From BBC

Jungr’s powers of interpretation make such an eclectic selection into a vital, coherent album. She sounds as if she has lived every line of every song. These are not just cover versions. Instead, Jungr and Wallace have taken the songs apart to find out how they work, before remodeling them.

From The Independent

After the tightly-focused spotlight on the late Nina Simone’s repertoire that was Just Like A Woman, Barb Jungr returns to her wide-ranging selections from The Great American Songbook with The Men I Love…Perhaps the most successful, and revolutionary, interpretation is of Talking Heads’ “Once In A Lifetime”, on which piano, cello, shakuhachi and subtle percussion create an almost oriental mystery reflected in the inquisitive, airy innocence of Jungr’s delivery. From Off the blocks

Jungr’s new album is truly great and I am going to build and  rest my case on one song: I’m a Believer by Neil Diamond. You likely remember the song as played by The Monkees. It was a hit and I thought horrific when it came out… What does she do to the song? What doesn’t she do! Mostly, now that I’m on the road and don’t have the song to play, being a non-ipod man, I think of a sensuous rythm that begins almost haltingly, then gains momentum and then — swings. Her moves are subtle within the song and she removes, as we listen over and over, the memory of its first proponents.

From Girl Singers

Turning pop music into classics has been a staple of Ms. Jungr’s work for some time, but never quite as far as she does on this disc.  Ms. Jungr – a master craftsman at interpreting lyrics – puts these songs into another space entirely. The style is powerful and raw, especially on the ballads.  And it’s surprising to me which tracks have been turned into ballads.  You haven’t heard “I’m A Believer” like this before.  Ever… Very highly recommended.

From Propose Music

Jungr’s powers of understand have such an heterogeneous preference in to a vital, awake album. She sounds as if she has lived each line of each song. These have been not only cover versions. Instead, Jungr and Wallace have taken the songs detached to find out how they work, prior to remodeling them.

From Midwest Record

One of the familiar but different kind of records in the vein of Nouvelle Vague, Jungr is clearly that important kind of uptown vocalist you have to pay attention to as she’s got the touch to turn anything into art, in a good way. A new high water mark for sitting down music.
