Nikki Aitken returns as the MC, with Matthew Carey on the piano.

We saw some regular faces: Nikki Aitken and Jamie Jewell singing “I’d Give It All For You”, Charlie Sanders with “Close Every Door”, Sidonie Henbest with numbers from her upcoming Adelaide Fringe Show “The Last of the Red Hot Mammas”, Loki Rikus with “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables” and the wonderful Chris Mason did a beautiful rendition of “The Best is Yet to Come”. Fiona Talbot Leigh taught us a thing or to about what to expect with her Fringe show as one of the performers from “Berlin Cabaret” and Adelaide actor Antje Guenther sang a German Lied song and explained to us why they use a “flower” instead of what they really meant!

There were a lot of new faces, including some young performers (who were sent home to bed not long after) with “For Good” from the musical Wicked. Sarah Laing returned for 2010 with a spectacular “Girl in 14 G”, Claire McEvoy wooed the crowd with a lovely Bob Dylan song, Mark Stefanoff gave us a bit of Jekyll and Hyde with “This is the Moment” and Anjali Habel-Orel made us remember what Cabaret Live is all about with a stunning version of “Here’s Where I Stand”.

We were also introduced to Matthew Carey singing for the first time at Cabaret Live, which was a fantastic highlight early on in the night.

Cabaret Live is really getting the place to be on the first Sunday of the month. Keep an eye out for the next one and make sure you get there early!

During his brief visit back to Australia, join Simon Burke to launch his debut album Something About Always at Civic Cabaret on February 15. With musical director Daniel Edmonds at the piano and Simon’s smooth vocals behind the microphone, the night will offer a rare opportunity to experience Simon up-close and personal in the intimate cabaret room at the Civic Hotel. Simon has just completed a season as Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music in Toronto, following a season opposite John Barrowman in La Cage Aux Folles in London.

Simon has achieved critical and popular acclaim on stage and screen in Australia and internationally, since winning the AFI Award for Best Actor at the age of 13 for his performance in The Devil’s Playground. His first music theatre role was Marius in the original Australian cast of Les Miserables, since then has starring roles include Anything Goes, Falsettos, Chicago, The Wild Party, High Society, They’re Playing Our Song, Company and the world premieres of Satango and Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. Simon’s many London stage credits include the roles of Raoul in Phantom of the Opera and Carl-Magnus in A Little Night Music opposite with Dame Judi Dench at the Royal National Theatre. His impressive repertoire extends to film and television as well, including Pitch Black (with Vin Diesel), Brides of Christ, and After the Deluge. Simon is also one of Play School’s most loved and long-standing presenters.

Simon’s debut album, Something About Always, is an intimate recording that allows you to experience his rich, powerful and emotive voice, and features two very special guest stars: Connie Fisher and Caroline O’Connor. Including classic musical theatre numbers like All I Care About Is Love, You’re The Top, Sorry Grateful and Edelweiss, the album is a collection of songs that have played a part in Simon’s life and career. Simon writes, “I guess recording your first album is maybe like, writing your first novel: you sing what you know. These songs have gotten to know me over the years – in and out of character, in cabaret, at Carnegie Hall; from Play School to the Palladium.”

Join Simon at Civic Cabaret on February 15 for his first (and last) performance in Sydney for a very long time! Something About Always will be available for purchase on the night at the special price of $20 and Simon will be available to sign copies.

He will also make a guest appearance at ShowQueen Sunday on 14th February at Kit & Kaboodle Supper Club.

I’ve been totally checked out by every guy (and several women) in Melbourne and I desperately needed new customers for my bargain basement. Sure I’m no frills but I am all thrills and it’s only fair that I share a part of myself with South Australia.

It was also cheaper to bring my caravan here than Sydney.

How did you get into the business? Do you have any supermarket qualifications?

LYSA

Working here was obvious. I’d heard the Supermarket was a great place to meet potential husbands and now by working here, I get to scan the Man as I scan the brands. There really are no qualifications for working in a Supermarket like this one. It is true what they say… Less Is More. Therefore i give so much by just being myself and not giving a toss. Customers love me for that. They’re often lost for words after meeting me.

You’re setting up business at the Star Theatres on Sir Donald Bradman Drive. What can customers expect when they shop at your store?

LEESA

They can expect integrity, honesty, strong family values, a sense of pride and good taste to certainly be swept aside! Shopping at any of the stores I work in has always been an experience for the shoppers; not necessarily a good one. In our line of business the customer is not always right, but the price is!

LYSA

I think that’s best summed up by our store’s motto “expect nothing and you won’t be disappointed.”

I gather you are ardent TV viewers. What shows are you looking forward to in 2010 as the rating season begins?

LEESA

With the new Channel 99-GO station I am hoping that reruns of Blue Heelers are just around the corner. That Johns Wood is so hot! Obviously anything with Lisa McCune is a given and I will be watching the Biggest Loser this year to get fashion tips from the before photos.

LYSA

TV is my life! It’s where dreams come true and where we all first met Lisa McCune, our beloved Gold Logie Goddess.

2010 brings a whole world of entertainment potential with shows like ‘Cougar Town’ with Ms Cox (obviously inspired by myself), but I may be holding a protest and banning myself from TV until my friend Leesa Alopecia is accepted as a contestant on ‘Dance Your Ass Off.’

If you were ever immortalised in a feature film or midday tv movie, who would you want to play your character on screen?

LEESA

Whilst the obvious answer is probably Rikki Lake, I am hoping that with a little more of weight loss, Kathleen Turner will play me. But only if she loses the weight.

LYSA

It’s obvious that I would be played by Lisa McCune as it looks like we were practically separated at after birth. I would be pleased to let Lisa play me on TV or on the big screen. It could be her motion picture break out role. I’m humble enough to say I am the role of a lifetime.

She’s one of the world’s premiere song stylists, drawing critical acclaim both sides of the Atlantic and famed for her inspired recasting of material associated with the likes of Bob Dylan, Jacques Brel, Nina Simone and Elvis Presley. Her latest album, The Men I Love, her first for Naim documents Jungr’s love of American popular song and its songwriters. And as has come to be expected with Jungr, the material displays her impressive ability to re-imagine well-known popular songs, revealing deep meanings and latent emotional content that comes to light when she dislodges the songs from their original contexts.

“There is a body of great work which sits for me right inside the classic Great American Songbook, where songs both stand the test of time and also are able to be re-imagined and sometimes re-harmonised, allowing them to grow and develop beyond original recordings.”

I’m completely torn between downloading the full album now, or waiting until the album comes out.

What was it like to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last year?

Amazing – we went there with so many wishes and hopes, and we managed to tick all the boxes. We met other performers, saw other shows, attended forums for performers and managed to hang out with some fun people. Because we went there with the intention of really enjoying the festival itself, we not only performed and busked, but we took in the incredible vibe that is Edinburgh. The atmosphere was phenomenal and the city was alive 24/7.

What comparisons can you draw between the Edinburgh and Adelaide Fringes?

They are very similar – there is an excitement in the air, the knowledge that there are performances happening all around, you can sense the nerves of opening night jitters, as well as the relief of closing night exhaustion.

The biggest difference is the weather! It’s freezing in Edinburgh, even during their summer! The fact that both festivals are respected and adored across the globe tells me that they are both winning events. The Edinburgh Fringe staff were very helpful, but I reckon our Adelaide gang does it the best!

Why did you choose the music of Motown as the theme for this show?

The music makes us feel happy, it’s sexy and it’s wholesome.

When were back stage in Edinburgh for the 2009 Fringe Festival we were listening to a CD that Kelly had brought to play in the house whilst our audience was getting seated. Although it wasn’t strictly Motown, it had that soul and funk that we had never yet challenged ourselves to try. Standing backstage we used this music to get our voices warm and then one of us said “We should do a Motown show!” The idea rolled from there.

Motown has produced such a string of hit songs it would be almost impossible to cover them all in one show. How do you decide which songs to include and which to leave out?

We looked at over 200 songs to begin with, sitting down together and thinking about the aspects of our vocal ranges, diversity and what we really loved. The Chillies always like to sing about experiences that we have had, or at least been close to.

We also try to emulate the songwriter’s emotions when he or she was writing the song.

The thought of tackling Motown was much easier in theory than in practice. Rehearsals are intense!

We have only ever worked with backing tracks, so inviting “Twisted J”, a 7 piece jazz/funk/soul band into our rehearsal space has been an incredible experience. The boys are so talented, creative and supportive! The songs were soon whittled down to the 25 we have been working on.

Berry Gordy was known for being very hands on in shaping the acts on his label. If Motown signed the Three Chillies what do you think he might ask you to do differently?

Hands on alright! Literally! I think he would want to make Kelly a star, he would want to clone Oriana for multiple stardom potential, and probably ask me to organise the album release!

He would ask us to rehearse more, and work then make me work on my moves - although I reckon I do ok for an unco Italian girl! Berry would also ask us to ditch some of the more “colourful” language we can sometime launch into…but we are the Chillies after all!

You each came from various performing backgrounds. What were they and what prompted you to form the trio?

We met during the rehearsal period of a musical. Another member of the cast Sharon Stokes, was finishing her Drama degree and asked Kelly, Ori and I to play 3 well known Broadway stars for her final thesis performance. We had such a fun time playing Mary Martin, Liza Minnelli and Ethel Merman. Although we were so different we gelled instantly and I knew that we were onto something good.

I created the Three Chillies Theatre Company from that experience because I knew we had captured something special and had a real point of difference.

You’ve been working together since 2004. It’s an achievement to maintain a professional relationship, or any relationship, for that long. What strengths and weaknesses you’ve discovered in sustaining the trio for 7 years?

We are proud and very happy with our relationship. The fact that our partners, (Belinda, Adam and Lorry) have supported us the whole way through has been an incredible help. Our family and friends have been there since the early days, making sure that the audiences have always been big from day one. We respect each other’s ideas and hear each other out.

We are now able to read each other on and off stage, and if there is ever a change of plans during the performance, we can go with it. The only weakness we find is staying creative – but all it takes is for one of us to come up with a whacky idea and the Chillie ball is rolling once again.

Do you each have specific roles and jobs within the group or is it all for one and one for all?

Kelly is a trained soprano, and has worked extensively with bands and backing vocals for international artists. Her ability to pick harmonies and her ear for music and the sound is excellent. She is probably the one that decides how our show should flow and is great at arranging the order of the songs, and the banter to match.

Oriana is an incredible talent who started singing and dancing at a very young age and has never looked back. It’s generally Oriana’s role to choreograph our shows as her dance and movement is so amazing. She has taught me stage craft and coaches us beautifully.

I am more of the organizer – and therefore I am back of house, booking gigs, organising the travel, coordinating the Fringe etc. I have a comedic streak that often comes out whilst I am performing, often changing the show completely!

When it comes to the music – we take equal responsibility for the choice of songs and how we should present our shows. We brainstorm, then brainstorm some more… talk a lot, laugh a lot, go out for a drive, get tattoos, then we knuckle down to write and rehearse. There’s always lots of fun – lots of discussion – and lots of junk food to keep us motivated! We wouldn’t have it any other way.

What has been the Three Chillies’ most embarrassing moment on stage?

When my microphone just plain stopped working – half way through a sold out show during our Adelaide Fringe 2008 show – Hollywood All Bust… I was singing “Will you Still love me tomorrow” and ad libbed “Will you still hear me in the back row?” It honestly got a very big laugh. Kelly and Oriana behind me were also laughing uncontrollably, but we managed to get through it.

If you could commission a new song from any songwriter (past or present) for the Three Chillies to perform, who would you approach?

Sondheim, of course! Closer to home, there is an Australian songwriter by the name of Sean Peter who is tremendously talented – we would love to work with him!

After a sell out run at last year’s Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Ali McGregor (star of La Clique, Opera Australia and The Opera Burlesque) returns to her favourite venue – The Spiegeltent.

Backed by a trio of Australia’s hottest young jazz musicians, Ali launches her long awaited debut CD “Jazz Cigarette” – featuring classic jazz ballads and sassy blues made famous by Billie, Ella and Britney…

These are the songs that made her want to sing, from Cole Porter’s ‘So in Love’ and Gershwin’s ‘The Man I Love’ to unique interpretations of Eurythmic’s ‘Sweet Dreams and Britney’s ‘Oops I did it Again’.

Don’t miss out on this superb hour of song from one of this country’s most versatile singers.

After 5 years as a principal soprano with Opera Australia, Ali has leapt into the world of cabaret and variety with her Variety Night becoming a cult hit at both Melbourne Comedy and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals. Her Opera Burlesque show opened up the realms of cross-genre cabaret and her new show Jazz Cigarette has already sold out The Spiegeltent in Melbourne. Her debut album of the same name features Australian jazz legend James Morrison and is set to be released in February 2010.
