Nikki Aitken Presents...Reviews from the web

Via Fringe Benefits

Nikki’s onstage persona is the definition of the word diva and her fabulous vocals are the definition of brilliance. After having previously presented narrative based cabaret shows, Nikki, along with the wonderful musical direction from Matthew Carey has put together a fantastic theme driven show with the theme being ‘Alive and Kicking’.

Via Adelaide Now

Her lyrics and monologues are witty, cheeky and provocative with a healthy dose of self send-up and she sings in a good cabaret style. Accompanied by Mathew Carey at the piano she soon had a full house completely on side.

Via Kryztoff Fringe Raw

On at the premier jazz/cabaret venue in town, The Promethean, Nikki Aitken Presents a themed variety style cabaret show. Selecting a few favourites from Sondheim, Brookes and Brown, Aitken’s vocals are lovely and light, truly entertaining. Matthew Carey, who has worked with the likes of Liza Minnelli, is fantastic as musical director, pianist and banter buddy for Aitken.

Cabaret Live! Valentine's Edition

Valentine’s Day Special Cabaret Live (#10) wrap-up – 7/2/2010 courtesy of Ben Finn.

This month’s Cabaret Live was absolutely jam packed with its special Valentine’s Day theme.

La Boheme was “standing room only”, with patrons being turned away at the door because it was at maximum capacity.

Nikki Aitken returns as the MC, with Matthew Carey on the piano.

We saw some regular faces: Nikki Aitken and Jamie Jewell singing “I’d Give It All For You”, Charlie Sanders with “Close Every Door”, Sidonie Henbest with numbers from her upcoming Adelaide Fringe Show “The Last of the Red Hot Mammas”, Loki Rikus with “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables” and the wonderful Chris Mason did a beautiful rendition of “The Best is Yet to Come”. Fiona Talbot Leigh taught us a thing or to about what to expect with her Fringe show as one of the performers from “Berlin Cabaret” and Adelaide actor Antje Guenther sang a German Lied song and explained to us why they use a “flower” instead of what they really meant!

There were a lot of new faces, including some young performers (who were sent home to bed not long after) with “For Good” from the musical Wicked. Sarah Laing returned for 2010 with a spectacular “Girl in 14 G”, Claire McEvoy wooed the crowd with a lovely Bob Dylan song, Mark Stefanoff gave us a bit of Jekyll and Hyde with “This is the Moment” and Anjali Habel-Orel made us remember what Cabaret Live is all about with a stunning version of “Here’s Where I Stand”.

We were also introduced to Matthew Carey singing for the first time at Cabaret Live, which was a fantastic highlight early on in the night.

Cabaret Live is really getting the place to be on the first Sunday of the month. Keep an eye out for the next one and make sure you get there early!

Australians Study Cabaret at Yale University

Adelaide cabaret performers Benjamin Finn and Nikki Aitken have been accepted into the International Cabaret Conference at Yale University in the United States. The annual conference is an intensive nine-day teaching program in the art of cabaret performance and trains professionals for the live entertainment industry.

The award-winning faculty and renowned consultants guide 39 students in a collaborative process of critical refining and honing. The conference features classes and lectures covering cabaret performance technique: acting for singers, lyric interpretation, focus and concentration, act structure, act writing, material research, and comedic development. Participants and Tutors of the conference also perform in the “Summer Nights Cabaret Concerts at Yale”, which is open to the General Public.

Ben recalls “I first heard about the Cabaret Conference when my friend Catherine Campbell went in 2006. I’ve been in correspondence with Erv Raible (Executive Artistic Director) over the past 12 months. I look forward to being challenged and inspired, as well as learning life skills that I probably wouldn’t experience anywhere else.”

Auditions are held throughout the United States in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Minneapolis-St. Paul, New Orleans, New York, Seattle and Washington DC, as well as Internationally in Jerusalem, London, Canada and in Amsterdam. Past students have come from the USA, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, South Africa and the United Kingdom.

Some of the past tutors have included Amanda McBroom (who wrote The Rose), Julie Wilson (legendary Cabaret performer who was featured in the 2009 Adelaide Cabaret Festival), Jason Graae (from TV’s 6 Feet Under), Laurel Masse (from Grammy Award winning group Manhattan Transfer) and Michael Orland (current pianist, arranger and associate musical director for American Idol).

What do you get when an almost-30 year old Greek-Australian heads off in search of fame, fortune and her EU passport? When your travels lead you to the Big Smoke of London and your future seems to be in fashion, you'd better beware of stepping ahead of the pack.

What happens next will make you reconsider 'next big things' as Nikki, fuelled by a life crisis and a cab ride to Athens, works out what she wants from the rest of her life.

It’s Devil Wears Prada meets Shirley Valentine.
