International Cabaret Conference At Yale - Report Pt 4 (Final)

Adelaide cabaret performer Nikki Aitken shares her experiences at the International Cabaret Convention.

A cabaretconfessional.com exclusive.

POST TRANSIT AND THE BUSINESS OF SHOW!

Last Saturday was the final night performance of the Conference. Since then, conference attendees have made their way back to their respective homes with the feeling that an amazing experience just occurred. Reflecting on the nine days at Yale, the sheer exhaustion it created compounded with a 24 hours of travel back to Australia, I have to say, I’m glad to be alive and less jetlagged now! These sentiments have been echoed in what feels like an instantly cohesive and supportive group of YALE ALUMNI 2010!

The last few days of the course were FULL ON! After we went into storyboarding the cabaret, it was all systems go. Not only were we in full production mode (did I mention we had 3 days to create this?!) but our days were filled with one on one sessions with the master teachers and personal preparation for the show. It was amazing to see how each individual member of the group committed themselves and contributed to create a show that we were all so proud of.  I’m sure each group felt the same way about their work – as they should!

A personal highlight for me during the creative process was my one on one session with Mark Burnell where, through our powers combined we composed the finale for our group – in one take! Luckily Jeff Lunden was in the room and recorded the moment otherwise it may have been lost forever.

On the Friday night, we watched more performances from our Master Teachers – Sally Mayes and Faith Prince. This was just about as much information, joy and brilliance that my brain could handle! Whilst fearful of leaving such an intensively creative environment, I was a little bit glad that the overload would soon be done with. Brains really can get too full!

As Performance Group 3 we named our show ‘In Transit,’ and were second in the running order. I got to hear bits and pieces from show that ran first. Did I mention that the Iseman Theatre was a real proper like theatre with call speakers, dressing rooms with big bathrooms and showers and everything! This little girl from Adelaide was a little struck by the grand scale! When I wasn’t running around like a stunned mullet, I heard some beautiful voices float through the dressing room which made me smile. I can’t wait to see the DVD!

As Tovah Fedshuh said at the end of the performance ‘Win Or Learn,’ So, here’s some of the things I learned that are resonating for me in this moment.

For maximum success; know your boundaries, know what counts.

Know effective time management skills, learn how to sleep when you are in high pressure environments!

HONOUR YOUR SHOW TEAM. This Business of Show is an adrenaline filled wonder and one that I can say I am proud to be a part of. There are no people like show people, and I hope to continue to meet and play with many more through the course of my life!

It was an absolute honour to be a part of Performance Group 3 -

Perry ‘Bette’ Balin, Julie Cascioppo, Ted Davis, Nancy Gair, Nicky Gainer, Moshe Mintz, Judy Ann Moulton, Michael ‘La Zonga’ Pacas, Willie Pizarro, Harold Sanditen and my roomie Calia Vandyk.

And to learn and work with our incredibly supportive Faculty Advisers -

Tex Arnold, Mark Burnell, Jason Graee, Sally Mayes and Tovah Feldshuh.

The wonderful Student Performance Group 1 consisted of -

Student Performance Group 2 consisted of -

International Cabaret Conference at Yale - Report Pt 1

Adelaide cabaret performer shares her experiences at the International Cabaret Convention.

A cabaretconfessional.com exclusive.

Day 2 of the International Cabaret Convention and I'm definitely at Yale! With 35 other cabaret performers from as far away as the UK and Jerusalem. I have travelled the furthest to come here, although a couple of hours behind me is a guy from Luera, NSW. Another Australian accent! The university campus is just as imagined - old architecture built in an English style. I feel like I am in Cambridge or Oxford - the dorms are modern though. This is a good thing as it is hot and about 90% humidity right now!

After check in yesterday and many "Hello, how are you? What is your name? Where are you from? You look like fun!' exchanges, we were taken on a group tour of the area. The people doing the course are from varied backgrounds - one guy here croons like Sinatra but is a Neuro-Psychologist by day. I am rooming with Martha Stewarts' TV series production manager and the guy I rode up with is PA to Marylin Rodgers (daughter of Richard Rodgers) and David Zippel. The other girl I'm rooming with performed on Oprah last week...as you do!

Last night, after dinner, it was off to rehearse for the two days worth of masterclasses ahead. We met the Musical Director we would work with, my group has Tex Arnold for this first series of Performance Technique masterclasses.

Today, each singer had 30 minutes to work on their song, and 19 teachers would have to negotiate how they would comment on each of the pieces. There was some great stuff! It seemed the theme of the day was '"Put more sex in it!" This ended with a student's rendition of "Taylor The Latte Boy" as sung from the perspective of a Couger. It was questionable and turned the whole day back around to exploring innocence.

We had an initial consult for IMAGE. We were handed out sheets which showed the 'Western Image Standard' for face and body and were told to observe ourselves in every mirror at every opportunity - and not to feel vain. 'Vanity is the performers best asset' apparently. Thank you, I think....!

The concert at the end of the evening was given by Julie Wilson and Tovah Feldshuh (www.tovahfeldshuh.com) - Julie was amazing, if any of you saw her in Adelaide last year, you will understand! I LOVE Tovah! She is the funniest thing I have ever seen in cabaret. She performed for an hour and a half in a 'Catherine Tate' style cabaret; playing a different character in every bit. An Italian retiree from the Bronx, her Jewish father, grandmother, mother and many more. Tovah had the longest running one woman cabaret on Broadway in 2004 and understandably is my new idol!

Tomorrow, it's my turn to sing in front of the group. I'm singing my new favourite, 'Ready To Be Loved,' the faculty staff have been very direct to all the other students - no bullshit and straight to the point so I'm excited about being on the receiving end of it!

Interview: Cabaret + Diva + Comedy = Nikki Aitken

Adelaide’s favourite award-winning cabaret diva Nikki Aiken is on her way to Sydney and New York to present ATTACK OF THE 40 FOOT WEDGE!.   A cheeky, hilarious star Nikki will take you on a big fun ride, complete with the title song about a giant shoe. Just days away from her big trip to the Big Apple, she miraculously finds time to answer some questions and shares behind the scenes stories with Cabaret Confessional.

Your show ATTACK OF THE 40 FOOT WEDGE! follows your trip in Europe. Why did you choose that particular theme and what was it like creating the show?

My life in Europe was the most hilarious time of my life, and it would be such a shame not to share! Creating the show was like slamming my head against a brick wall, it hurt like hell while I was doing it, but god it felt good when it was finished!

When you’re writing cabaret shows, what are the elements do you try and incorporate into your shows?

Comedy, Comedy, Comedy…original songs, tragedy, piss yourself laughing comedy…followed by shit hot songs.

What elements do you find most challenging and the most rewarding about putting together a show and performing it?

Finding the balance between the realism in the script whilst providing maximum entertainment value.

How do you choose your songs for your shows?

I write them and then I choose songs that sound like I wrote them that further the narrative.

What defines ‘cabaret’ to you?

A show that I’m in. No, seriously. A show that I’m in. I will use a quote from the fabulous Matthew Carey to answer this question. ‘cabaret is anything you want it to be that includes storytelling and songs.’

How did you come across cabaret as an art form and what inspired you to explore the genre as a performer?

I came across it when I was two. I guess you could say it was an organic experience since then.

You’re about to make your New York debut. What thoughts are going through your head?

Um, what thoughts aren’t going through my head? The main one is a general brain explosion that screams “It’s really, really happening!!”

You got accepted as one of the 39 students to attend the Cabaret Conference at Yale University later this month.  What was your audition piece and the reason for choosing it?

I directed them to my website where I had uploaded YouTube clips from my last production of THE ATTACK OF THE 40 FOOT WEDGE because it’s what I had recorded at the time of the audition submission.

What are the things do you hope to learn from the conference?

Whatever it has to teach me about the craft and business of cabaret. As much as I can absorb!!

What is the most memorable cabaret you’ve performed so far?

‘I Put Out On The Second Date’.  It was my first full-length cabaret out of University.

Three reasons why people should see ‘ATTACK OF THE 40 FOOT WEDGE!’?

If I may, I will answer with one reason not to see the show. Incontinence.

What did you want to be when you were a child?

A Star. Was there anything else?

How do you relax on your day off?

My day off, sorry can you repeat that question in English?

Who would you like to collaborate with if you could choose anyone?

Anyone! Well, here it goes - in no particular order.. Matthew Carey (obviously), Kristin Chenoweth, Schönberg and Boubil, Baz Luhrman, Caroline O’Conner, Hugh Jackman, Hugh Sheridan, Peter Rutherford, Stephen Schwartz, Stephen Sondheim, Pasek and Paul, Basil Hogios, Christopher Hurrell, Adam de Launay, David Heinrich, Amber McMahon, Tripod, Justin Hamilton, Flight Of The Conchords, Tricia Ryan, Cate Blanchett, Sidonie Henbest… I could go on, but I appreciate there are limits on byte space on the web, perhaps I should stop.

What’s in store for you when you return from your trip to the States?

A season at The Seymour Centre in Sydney with the wonderful Mr. Matthew Carey where we will reprise a newer and more sparkly version of Cabaret Alive and Kicking!

Attack of the 40 Foot Wedge hits Sydney and New York

One of the most charming divas I’ve seen on stage, award-winning cabaret star Nikki Aitken is making her New York city debut with her hit cabaret show Attack of the 40 Foot Wedge. But not before treating the Sydneysiders before she departs. Her shows are side-splittingly hilarious and boy, can she sing! Be quick and book the show for a fun night-out.

She’ll also be attending the prestigious Cabaret Conference at Yale University during her stay in the US.  Stay tuned for the upcoming interview with Nikki.

Life can change from just one dream!

What do you get when an almost-30 year old Greek-Australian heads off in search of fame, fortune and her EU passport? When your travels lead you to the Big Smoke of London and your future seems to be in fashion, you’d better beware of stepping ahead of the pack.

What happens next will make you reconsider ‘next big things’ as Nikki, fuelled by a life crisis and a cab ride to Athens, works out what she wants from the rest of her life.

Nikki Aitken Presents...Reviews from the web

From Fringe Benefits

Nikki’s onstage persona is the definition of the word diva and her fabulous vocals are the definition of brilliance. After having previously presented narrative based cabaret shows, Nikki, along with the wonderful musical direction from Matthew Carey has put together a fantastic theme driven show with the theme being ‘Alive and Kicking’.

Read the rest of the review by Alicia Norton here.

From Adelaide Now

Her lyrics and monologues are witty, cheeky and provocative with a healthy dose of self send-up and she sings in a good cabaret style. Accompanied by Mathew Carey at the piano she soon had a full house completely on side.

Read the rest of the review by John McBeath here.

From Kryztoff Fringe Raw

On at the premier jazz/cabaret venue in town, The Promethean, Nikki Aitken Presents a themed variety style cabaret show. Selecting a few favourites from Sondheim, Brookes and Brown, Aitken’s vocals are lovely and light, truly entertaining. Matthew Carey, who has worked with the likes of Liza Minnelli, is fantastic as musical director, pianist and banter buddy for Aitken.
